Aircraft: Curtiss P-40E Warhawk, serial number unknown, Eleventh Fighter Squadron, 343rd Fighter Group, United States Army Air Force, Umnak Island, June 1942, pilot unknown - initials: 'J.W.E.'

[June 3, 1942] "The radio operator at Dutch Harbour tapped out a hurried message, 'about to be bombed.' ... To the east, Major Chennault's P-40 pilots went about their morning business, unaware of what was taking place at Dutch Harbour. The jerry-rigged communications system that had been hastily installed between the Navy base and the forward army air field had failed."
